Optimize your media! Not all content is created equal. Your computer has a limited number of resources and VDMX aims to get the most out of it. Depending on how your videos are encoded, it might take more of your computer’s resources to playback your video files. MP4s (H264 or H265) can be heavily compressed and require more processing power to seek frames during playback. (E.g. YouTube, Vimeo, or Facebook videos are more compressed for smaller file sizes). If you want to use a more CPU intensive codec such as H264 or H265 it is recommended that you re-encode with every frame as a “key frame” or if using FFMPEG set min GOP length to 1.

The VIDVOX team has also worked in partnership with others to create HAP, a GPU accelerated video codec for optimized playback and AVF batch encoder which is designed to exporting optimized media for VDMX and other live performance softwares. When you download VDMX, the application for AVF batch encoder will be in the “Extras” folder of the .dmg. If you want to learn more about HAP you can visit here: https://hap.video/

Pro Tip: We highly recommend that your playback media is on a Fast SSD separate from your operating system (especially on Intel macs). The latest generation of Apple Silicone Macs (M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max) have high performance internal SSDs achieving over 4000+ MB/s read and write speeds which means you can run your content off the internal SSD without slowing down the system as much as the older generation of Macs (Intel-based).

You can download the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test from the Mac App Store to test your drive speeds. Read and write speeds are above 150MB/s is fine for playing multiple 1080p videos at the same drive. Newer SSDs offering 500, 700, & 1000MB/s are even better. Older USB 2.0 hard drives may see read/write speeds below 90MB/s which can cause delays in your playback as the media plays catchup during the playback process. Lastly, The performance of SSD drives can drop drastically if there’s not enough free space on the drive. If you are using SSDs make sure you leave at least 25% of the SSDs capacity free.
